Susan started Woodlands Test Prep while still working a full-time job. She initially planned to tutor on weekends to make extra money as a single mom. She enjoyed tutoring and found it challenging but rewarding. She eventually realized the need for a formalized company and hired an admin to help with appointment making and correspondence. As the business grew, more tutors joined the team. Susan believes in the value of standardized tests and sees them as an opportunity to teach students life skills. The pandemic forced a transition to online tutoring, which they have embraced and improved upon. Woodlands Test Prep focuses on in-person classes and sets expectations with parents and students regarding score improvements and the ideal time to start test prep. They strive to group students with similar abilities in their classes and are always looking for quality tutors. In this conversation, Susan discusses the qualities of a good tutor, emphasizing the importance of empathy and the ability to connect with students. She also talks about the shift to digital SAT and the benefits it brings for students. Susan shares her perspective on the split between content expertise and building a connection with students, stating that both are equally important. She also touches on the demand for college admissions essay help, her role as a tutor and business owner, and the use of technology in the classroom.
